Did you know that words tell the story of the circumstances when they were created and who created them? About 60 % of English words are of Latin origin and they accurately tell about the conquest by Romans, Normans, the laws they instituted, the food they ate, and many other aspects of life; and something especially curious is what happened to animals, and here goes the curiosity: The names of practically all the animals when alive are English, but when they are prepared for food they are Norman. So, the Englishman's cow, bull or ox became French beef; his sheep and lamb became French mutton; his swine or pig became pork or bacon; his calf turned to veal, and the deer went to Norman tables as venison.
